After a record-breaking first season in which he produced goals by the sackful as Manchester City earned their third consecutive league victory, Erling Haaland was awarded the Player of the Season for the Premier League on Saturday. This honor comes after Haaland led Manchester City to their third consecutive league title.
The previous record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season was 34, which was shared by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer and remained for nearly three decades. Haaland, who is only 22 years old, has surpassed that mark by scoring 36 goals in 35 games this season.
The general people, the captains of the 20 Premier League teams, and a panel of soccer experts all voted for the Norwegian player to win the award for Player of the Season.
Saturday’s Premier League Player of the Season was Erling Haaland.
Kevin De Bruyne won the title in 2019-20 and 2021-22, while Ruben Dias won it in 2020-21, bringing the total number of consecutive seasons that City players have won the accolade to four.
Haaland defeated De Bruyne, the combination from Arsenal consisting of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford of Manchester United, Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur, and Kieran Trippier of Newcastle United, who were all competitors for the award.
After receiving a record-setting 82% of the votes, he was also awarded the title of Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association.
When City play their final game of the season on Sunday against Brentford, Haaland will have the opportunity to add to his Premier League total. This will be City’s last game of the season.
