Next year, David Warner intends to play his final Test match, which will take place on his home field at the Sydney Cricket field (SCG) against Pakistan.
That will be one step towards a clean exit from the international game, and Warner is hopeful that the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup, which is slated to be contested in the West Indies and the United States, will be his last game representing Australia internationally.
Given his poor performance in his most recent test, Warner’s participation in the New Year’s Test against Pakistan in Sydney is not a given.
David Warner is planning his Test cricket retirement ceremony at the SCG in January 2024.
In addition, there will be an abundance of cricket between now and then, which will make things much more difficult. However, this suggests that, in all likelihood, he will not participate in another test match away from his home venue after the Ashes.
“I’ve always said the [2024 T20] World Cup will be my final game, but I think I probably owe it to myself and my family,” Warner said prior to Australia’s training session at Beckenham, which is where they are preparing for the World Test Championship final that comes before the Ashes.
“I can confidently state that I will not be participating in the [Test] series against the West Indies if I am able to get runs here and continue to play back in Australia. If I can go through this and still have time to play the Pakistan series, then that is the point at which I will finish.
